BYOF (Bring Your Own Food)!
Eating clean and healthy food is important to me, especially when traveling. If I have something that doesn’t sit right then it could wreak havoc on my ability to show up for work and do my job. That’s why I have gotten into some healthy food habits especially when on the road.
Last week I was road tripping in America for work and we went to incredible places but there wasn’t always easy access to the food I was used to. I ended up accidentally getting MSG poisoning (that crap hides everywhere!) and I woke up feeling sick and puffy all over. Thankfully this doesn’t happen often but when it does it reminds me how vital it is that I travel with high protein and fat foods so that I don’t have to rely on foods that may make me sick.
I have a two pronged approach to food on the go. There are the things I can bring on the plane and travel long distance with and then there are the foods that I get when I land somewhere. The first thing I do when I land or arrive in a new place is research and head to the local health food store, market or farmers market. I can load up on simple snacks that can keep me nourished and are easy to assemble in a hotel room. Check out my favorites below!
Travel Treats:
- Four Sigmatic Mushroom Mix- this powder pack is mixed with all kinds of medicinal mushrooms that boost the immune system, reduce stress and energize. I can add to a smoothie, hot water/tea or to oatmeal
- Paleo Granola - I stock up on a local one from my farmers market and always bring a bag with me on the plane. It’s a great snack on its own or I can get some nutmilk or yogurt at that airport and make a proper breakfast out of it.
- Stevia Tincture - I try to stay pretty sugar free especially when traveling so this is great to add to tea or drinks when on the go to give a little sweetness!
- I am known for my yummy nut butter mixes and I often whip one up and pack it to go when I travel too. I do a combination of almond, coconut and walnut butter with a little raw honey so that I can get a spoonful of protein and fat when I’m on the go.
- Sea Snax. Great to get some greens and iodine in. Seaweed is packed with great vitamins and minerals!
-Sea Salt - I bring my own so I know I am getting the good stuff with minerals!
-Organic vegan broth. I just have to add water and I get all my minerals and vitamins in a tasty grounding broth!
-Trail mix. Tale as old as time. But it has stood the test of time because it works! Sprouted nuts and seeds and some dried fruit always hits the spot and is simple to take on the road.
- Dark, preferably raw, chocolate. I usually go for Hu Kitchen chocolate. It gives me a little extra energy when traveling can be exhausting but I need to be alert. It’s also packed with magnesium, good fats and iron.
Market Treasures:
- Tonnino Wild caught tuna fish - I opt for the one that is marinated in olive oil. This is simple to throw over a salad or have on its own and even assemble with some fermented veggies in a hotel room. No fridge or stove needed, it is packed with protein and fat to keep me satiated.
- Mary’s Gluten Free crackers or a gluten free cracker alternative. I love some crunch especially when it’s scooping up dips like I mention below!
- Hummus and Tahini - Both are full of protein and fat and delicious! Remember to read the labels and avoid safflower oil, canola oil, rapeseed oil, and other veggie oils. The less ingredients the better!
-Carrots and Cucumbers: Chop or buy pre-cut to eat with hummus or guac!
- Avocado and Guacamole. Avo keeps me satiated for hours and goes pretty well with everything. I can have with the tuna fish or with hummus and crackers.
- Cultured Veggies - Sauerkraut or cultured veggies are great source of probiotics and vitamin C which are both vital to keeping me in good health and spirits when I travel.
